A greatly simplified transition to EMV issuance
Today, consumers worldwide actively use more than 1.4 billion EMV-compliant chip cards to make payments in retail locations, at kiosks and over the Internet. Datacard Group® smart card solutions — including data preparation software and card issuance systems — are used to issue a majority of those EMV cards. Datacard has over 200 successful EMV implementations all over the world.
Visa’s recent announcement to speed adoption of smart cards in the U.S. will steadily increase the number of active EMV cards and present U.S. card issuers with new operational challenges. Visa’s acceleration of contact and contactless chip technology in the U.S. will also accelerate adoption of mobile payments based on Near Field Communications (NFC) technology.
Whether you plan to issue EMV cards from central locations or via a distributed instant issuance model — or some hybrid of the two models — Datacard offers proven solutions that greatly simplify the transition to EMV card issuance. Highlights of our solution include:
- Data Preparation - EMV applications require secure generation of chip application data, cryptographic algorithms and risk management elements . Datacard software simplifies this process by augmenting existing magnetic stripe data with EMV specific data that is loaded onto the chip. Our software facilitates establishing and configuring the additional risk management parameters, cryptographic keys and authentication certificates.. This data is then formatted and packaged for the personalization process that, from an operator’s perspective, looks just like the magnetic stripe process.
- Key Management - The introduction of key management makes smart card issuance seem infinitely more complicated than magnetic stripe card issuance. Keys are simply large numbers combined with cryptographic algorithms that ensure security in the personalization process and during transactions. Datacard software manages these keys and automates the insertion of them during both data preparation and personalization.
- Personalization Software - Our software securely and automatically manages the smart card personalization process. It unlocks the chip, transfers cardholder data and relocks the chip in a process that, again, is transparent to the personalization equipment operator during the issuance process.
- Payment Device Issuance Systems - The rapid acceptance of mobile applications will likely change the way financial institutions construct their card issuance processes and infrastructures. Datacard offers a broad portfolio of software and hardware systems forhigh-volume (centralized), distributed (instant) issuance of contact and contactless smart cards and for NFC mobile payment applications. Our key management, data preparation and personalization applications can also be upgraded to support NFC mobile phone wallets. Modular designs and portable software platformsallow card issuers to add capacity or create hybrid central/instant issuance models for cards and mobile phones.
Instant Flat Card Triggers 50 Branch Launch at BankPlus
BankPlus, founded in 1909, currently has over 60 offices in 33 Mississippi communities. In 2008, the bank was mailing thousands of Visa check cards each month, and it was taking five to seven business days for customers to receive their cards. As a result, the cards were rarely used in the first weeks after a new account was opened. The bank was presented with the challenge to find a card issuance solution that would get a check card into a customer’s hand as soon as a new account was opened. After a three-branch pilot, BankPlus launched a Datacard instant issuance solution across 50 branches.
Vietnamese Bank Makes Profitable Transition
Datacard worked closely with senior leaders and card operations managers at Sacombank to evaluate the bank’s financial card program, including productivity, profitability, security and opportunities for growth. A central card issuance strategy was developed, which featured the Datacard® MX6000™ card issuance system, Datacard® MXD™ card delivery system, Datacard® MXi™ envelope insertion system and Datacard® Affina® smart card software.

Personalization As A Differentiator In Financial Card Issuance - How to Capitalize on a Sweeping Consumer Trend
Financial institutions need fresh ideas. New legislation has created the need for new revenue sources. Empowered consumers are demanding more from their brands in return for their loyalty. An increasingly connected world is posing new challenges for card issuers and other marketers looking to elevate their offerings. The driving source for real, sustainable and profitable growth in this environment is technology. Financial institutions need to apply relevant and highly differentiated technologies to their business in order to compete and succeed in this market.
Optimizing Card Programs to Appeal to Today’s Consumers
As the financial environment transforms, building lasting, profitable relationships will require financial institutions to develop a deep understanding of consumer preferences and brand loyalty triggers. It will require providing products and services that become fundamental to the consumer’s daily life. For most financial institutions this opportunity lies in payment cards — with a special emphasis on fast-growing debit and prepaid cards.

The Adoption of EMV® Technology in the U.S.
Visa Inc. and MasterCard recently announced plans to accelerate chip migration in the United States by 2015. There is a new sense of urgency for all players in the market to understand what EMV technology means to them. Financial institutions and card issuers need to begin thinking about how this is going to affect them and what the next steps are to ensure that they are well positioned in the market as this migration happens. This paper is intended to help offer the various stakeholders insight into why now may be a good time to re-evaluate business models and card issuance programs.
Transforming Operations for Mass Customization
The market dynamics that are moving card issuers toward mass customization are not likely to go away. Creating unique value for individual customers via mass customization is a natural progression occurring across many different markets, effectively replacing the mass production techniques that preceded them. Card bureaus and other card issuers that embrace the “markets of one” concept and begin adapting systems and processes for mass customization will not only survive, they will thrive and lead in a competitive market.
